Which Construction NVQ do I need?

What is the difference between a Level 6 and Level 7 Construction NVQ?

A Level 6 Construction Site Management NVQ is designed for Site Managers responsible for the day-to-day planning, coordination and delivery of construction projects. Candidates typically manage programmes, subcontractors, quality, budgets and health and safety on individual sites.
The Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Senior Construction Management is intended for senior professionals with strategic responsibilities. Candidates often manage multiple projects, oversee regional operations, lead large teams, control commercial performance and contribute to business planning and organisational leadership.
Both qualifications are assessed in the workplace and recognise competence rather than classroom learning.
Can I skip Level 3 or 4 and go straight to Level 6?
Yes, if your current job role matches the requirements of the Level 6 qualification.
Construction NVQs assess occupational competence rather than previous qualifications. If you are already working as a Site Manager and carry out the duties required by the Level 6 standards, you may be able to enrol directly onto the Level 6 Construction Site Management NVQ.

Can I go straight to the Level 7 NVQ?
Yes, provided you are already working in a senior construction management position.
Unlike traditional academic qualifications, Construction NVQs are based on what you do in your current role. If you are responsible for strategic leadership, commercial management, business planning and managing multiple contracts or projects, you may be eligible to complete the Level 7 NVQ Diploma in Senior Construction Management without first completing Levels 4 or 6.
Your suitability will depend on your day-to-day responsibilities rather than your previous qualifications.
Which NVQ is suitable for Site Managers?
Most Site Managers complete the Level 6 Construction Site Management NVQ.
This qualification demonstrates competence in planning construction projects, managing subcontractors, controlling budgets, maintaining quality standards and overseeing health and safety. It is one of the most recognised management qualifications within the UK construction industry.
If your responsibilities extend beyond managing individual sites into regional or strategic leadership, the Level 7 qualification may be more appropriate.
Which NVQ is suitable for Site Supervisors?
Site Supervisors generally complete the Level 4 Construction Site Supervision NVQ or the Level 3 Construction Site Supervisor (Occupational).
